The Catholic bishops of Michigan are urging Catholics and all people of good will to vote No on Proposal 2. This proposed constitutional amendment, which will appear on the November general election ballot, seeks to permit the unregulated and unrestricted destruction of human embryos for experimental purposes. The proposal does nothing to advance ethical and proven adult stem cell research, which the Church supports.

Turtle Mountain Band Bans Abortion
10/27/08 Filed in: North Dakota
North Dakota’s Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa adopted a resolution prohibiting abortion on the reservation and property owned by the tribe. According to newspaper accounts here, here, and here a critic of the resolution claims that it violates procedural rules, Roe v. Wade, impacts the Violence Against Women Act, and imposes religious beliefs. Putting aside for now the procedural questions and Roe, it is difficult to see how it would violate the Violence Against Women Act since that act does not mandate abortion procedures. The religious imposition claim also makes no sense. The mere fact that some or even a majority of citizens rely on a religious belief in support of a particular policy does not make the policy invalid.

MCC Issues Bulletin Insert on “Citizenship and the Well-Informed Conscience;”
10/02/08 Filed in: Massachusetts
The Massachusetts Catholic Conference has issued a bulletin insert that addresses how Catholics are to fulfill their role as citizens in and outside of the voting booth. The MCC document uses a question and answer format to introduce and summarize the 2007 statement of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.” The four Ordinaries of Boston, Fall River, Springfield and Worcester will be distributing the MCC bulletin insert to their pastors, requesting that it be duplicated and made available in their parishes in October. The text of the bulletin insert, entitled “Citizenship and the Well-Informed Conscience,” is included below and a pdf version can be downloaded online at http://www.macathconf.org/08-FaithfulCitizenshipBulletinInsertEnglish.pdf. Spanish and Portuguese versions will soon be uploaded to the MCC website.
